Hi Shelby,
Here’s a quick run-down of what I hope you’re looking for.
I’m a technical designer for Joe Fresh, for the toddler boy and big boy size ranges, encompassing all commodities.
A technical designer is someone who puts together the fit/construction/design of the garment. I work on a web based
program creating tech packs and sketches. I review fit samples and see garments into production while communicating
daily with overseas vendors.
I went to Ryerson for fashion design and have a degree in design after completing 4 years. My first job out of Ryerson was
a technical design position for Abercrombie & Fitch in Ohio at their head office. Same type of job as I currently have, except
I worked on women’s knit product. My second job is my Joe Fresh position.
I have wanted to work in fashion since I was a little kid. I knew that Karl was head design at Chanel when I was 8. I guess you
could say, it’s a job and an obsession

I have always been inspired by the classic designers. The Balenciagas, the Chanels and
most recently Lanvin. I was going to go into architecture, but I figured I liked fashion so much, I might as well get paid to do
something I enjoy.
As for tips on pursuing a career in fashion, I would say to learn the basics. Take art-based courses in school, learn about
textiles, learn how to sew, and figure out if it’s something you really want to do. It’s not an easy industry to be in, especially
in Canada. Try to get as much practical experience as early on as you can. Make contacts wherever you go, even if they’re
based in retail or at small design firms. Everything will help you along the way.
